Transcendental Infestation (2014)
In August 2013, Jay Jensen, Curator of Contemporary Art, at the Honolulu Museum of Art, asked if I was interested in creating an installation for Natural Unnatural Supernatural, an exhibition that he was developing. Jay mentioned that my installation would be in a 10' x 10' x 10' wooden cubicle and that the space would include a watercolor by Robert Stackhouse and a fiberglass sculpture by Luis Jimenez. He also asked me to incorporate a medium that I had earlier used in the 6th Biennial of Hawai'i Artists, rubber cockroaches!
After working on a series of preliminary studies and drawings and experimenting with various adhesives, I had a good idea of what I wanted to do. The result was Transcendental Infestation.
I visited the exhibit after it opened a few times, and would stand to the side and observe people's reactions when they encountered my work. I felt so vindicated and fulfilled when I heard their gasps, laughter and shrieks. I was especially gratified when groups of children would come by, their reactions were priceless, eyes wide open, mouths agape, and a lot of giggles – I found my audience!
